2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 cup lightly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chocolate bits
Sugar for rolling cookies
Optional: 3/4 cup chopped walnuts
Oven 350°
Beat shortening and sugars in large bowl until blended.
Add egg, beat well. Add vanilla.
Combine and add flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Stir in walnuts and chocolate.
Roll in walnut sized balls and roll in sugar. Place about 2-inches apart on sheets.
Bake 12 to 15 minutes at 350° Cool on racks.
